CSUDH Tops Division II in National Consortium for Academics and Sports Outreach Honors

Orlando, FL -- Cal State Dominguez Hills connected with approximately 6,500 youth in its outreach effort during the 2006-07 school year, it was announced by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS), a total that topped all Division II schools in the nation, more than doubled the next closest D-II school, and nearly tripled the amount reach by the next CCAA institution.

With community service and outreach events occurring throughout all three competition seasons last year including “Dig 4 Kids,” the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center holiday visit, RBI and Urban Youth Academy Clinics, Read Across America, as well as visiting nearby elementary schools, the Toro student-athletes' involvement has continued to play a vital role in not only the development of the youth in their community, but also in their own self-development and growth.

“It's an honor to be recognized by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports, and I am so proud of our student-athletes, coaches and staff for really taking it upon themselves to rally around our and other deserving communities,” begins Patrick Guillen, CSUDH Director of Athletics.  “While excelling in the classroom and in competition are top priorities for our student-athletes, it is their involvement with community service and their sense of civic engagement that provide a key ingredient to their overall development as responsible citizens.  And to be recognized by the NCAS with this outstanding student-driven achievement is an honor, and one that the entire University should be proud of.”

This is the first NCAS award CSUDH received since the 2002-03 school year, which was the third-consecutive honor the Toros earned after claiming outreach accolades for the 2000-01 and 2001-02 academic years.

This academic year, the Toros already have conducted reading clinics at the Carson Boys and Girls Club, assisted Carson Mayor Jim Dear at his inaugural “Turkey Give-A-Way,” volunteered at the L.A. Regional Food Bank, participated in a soccer clinic for the “Soccer for Hope Foundation,” and produced a talent show to benefit the “Make-A-Wish” program, with many more programs planned for the spring.

Florida State, the University of Nebraska and the University of Maryland finished 1-2-3 in total outreach, with CSUDH placing ahead of major Division I schools such as Kentucky, Temple, Florida, Indiana, Ohio State, Duke and St. John's.

The next highest Division II school, Augusta State University outreached to approximately 3,000 youth, while UC San Diego's effort of 2,200 youth reached was the next and only other CCAA school to make the NCAS Outreach Honor Roll.

Founded in 1985 with 11 members, the NCAS recognizes the accomplishments of its now 224 members through an annual end of the year report.  Since its inception, these 224 members have combined to contributed $246 million in tuition and fees for 23,740 student-athletes to complete their degrees, and have benefitted well over 11 million young people through over 12 million hours of outreach and community service across the nation.
