Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Game 1    Game 2

Los Angeles, CA -- Cal State L.A. received late-game heroics to sweep a pair of CCAA games from Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday at Reeder Field.  Tyler Warmerdam slugged a two-run home run to give the Golden Eagles a 10-8 win in the opener and a two-run single from Christian Ramirez lifted Cal State L.A. to a 7-6 win in eight innings in the nightcap.

Cal State L.A. rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap to send the game into extra innings and then Ramirez gave the Golden Eagles the win after the Toros had taken the lead in the top of the eighth.

Cal State L.A. (13-16, 8-7 CCAA) collected 22 hits in the doubleheader, while Cal State Dominguez Hills had 17. The two teams combined for eight errors in the nightcap and five in the opener.

John Mitchell pitched a complete game for the Golden Eagles in the nightcap and allowed only two earned runs. He didn't walk a batter and struck out eight. Nathan Pickett worked six innings in the opener and Nico Moreno blanked the Toros over the last 1 1/3 innings to pick up the win.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the opener, only to see the Toros tie it with three runs in the fourth. Kevin Pillar doubled in a run, Jeff Cullen's groundout scored another and a Cal State L.A. error allowed the Toros to tie the game.

Cal State L.A. regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. One run scored on an error and Darrick Hale drove in the other with a single. The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-4 lead. Joe Park had a run-scoring double and Max Moya had a run-scoring single.

The Toros, though, fought back to tie the game. The Toros got one run with a run-scoring single by Eric Blackwell in the seventh and got three more runs in the eighth. Cullen, Martin Conde and Candelario Flores drew one-out walks to force over one run. Cody Puckett singled in a second run with an infield hit and the tying run scored on a throwing error.

Warmerdam, though, smacked his seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the inning with Park on base to give the Golden Eagles a 10-8 lead. Moreno retired the side in order in the ninth to close it out.

The Golden Eagles trailed for most of the game in the nightcap. Mitchell was betrayed by a shaky defense almost from the start. The Toros grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning after two were out. Puckett was hit by a pitch and Jon Alia singled to send him to second. Blackwell followed with a single to score Puckett and Alia came around to score when a throw from the outfield sailed into the Golden Eagle dugout.

Cal State L.A. cut it to 2-1 in the bottom of the first. Hale reached on an infield single, but was injured in the process. Pinch runner Kenny Shanahan came around to score after a groundout by Henry Contreras.

The Toros added another run in the third. Flores and Daniel Hartman singled and Puckett reached on an infield error to load the bases. Alia's groundout scored the run to make it 3-1.

The Toros added two more runs in the fifth when a flyball by Blackwell was misplayed allowing Hartman and Puckett to score.

Matt Hopps allowed only three hits and an unearned run in five innings of work, but he also issued eight of the Toros' 13 walks in the game.

The Golden Eagles tied the game with four runs in the seventh. Moya and Warmerdam led off the inning with walks and Contreras followed with a run-scoring single to make it 5-2. Ramirez followed with a walk to load the bases and Moreno drove in a run with a fielder's choice to make it 5-3. Devon Ramirez then doubled to right to score Contreras and Moreno came around to score the tying run when the ball was bobbled in the outfield.

The Toros regained the lead in the eighth inning. Cullen singled and pinch runner David Leyva took second on a sacrifice by Pillar. Flores then singled up the middle to score Leyva and he moved to second on an error in the outfield. Mitchell, though, avoided further damage to give Cal State L.A. an opportunity to rally in the bottom of the inning.

Moya was hit by a pitch to start the winning rally. Pinch runner Chris Lloyd moved to second when Warmerdam walked. Contreras dropped down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to move the runners over and he reached safely on a high throw to first. Ramirez then ended the game with a line-drive single to left-center.

The Toros will travel to Utah to take on Southern Utah for non-conference contests next week.
