Game 1 Game 2
Waipahu, HI – At Hans L'Orange Field, The HPU Sea Warrior baseball team opened the 2008 season with a doubleheader sweep of Cal Sate Dominguez Hills (3-6). HPU (2-0) took the first game 9-8 in 13 innings, and then the night cap 6-2. Junior Jon Alia led the offense, going 7-for-10 on the day.
Game one saw the Toros strike first to lead 5-1 after their half of the third inning. The HPU bats then came alive, as they plated five runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 6-5 lead. Runs were few and far between the rest of the way. In the bottom of the thirteenth inning, Paul Nishimura (3-2) drove in Michael Kealoha (5-6) for the game winner.
Spencer Omalza (1-0) captured the win for HPU, with Matt Hopps earning the loss for the Torros.
The nightcap featured less excitement, but a victory, nevertheless, for HPU. Kaimi Mead (1-0) stymied the Toros, pitching six strong innings, allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts. CSUDH held a 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, until HPU erupted with four runs. The Sea Warriors tacked on two more runs one inning later to coast to the victory behind Mead's dominant pitching performance.
David Leyva earned the loss for CSUDH in allowing four runs on five hits.
The two teams continue their series tomorrow, February 16, with another doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Field.
