The Master's College Knocks 22nd-Ranked Toros From Ranks of Unbeaten, 75-74

Box Score
Carson, CA -- The Toros' perfect season came to an end in thrilling fashion tonight as a long 3-point attempt by CSUDH sharp-shooter Jonathan Toliver bounced off the back of the rim as time expired, giving visiting Master's College a 75-74 win.  With the loss, its first of the season, No. 22 ranked CSUDH falls to 7-1 on the year.

The two teams played it tight to the vest from the outset, with neither team holding more than a 4-point edge through the first half, tying six times during the break.  CSUDH finally took control of the first period behind 10 Toliver points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, enjoying a 44-40 lead entering the break.

After intermission, the Mustangs started to find their stroke, climbing back into the contest and tying the game three more times, the last at 51-51 on a Jeremy Haggerty jumper with 17:22 left in regulation.

A Shaun Engle trey six minutes later stretch CSUDH's lead to 54-69 at the 11:05 mark, before a Drew Menez answered with a three and Dean Hadley followed with a layup to again knot the game, this time at 64-all.

CSUDH regained the lead on a Ryan Walton layup, before a Haggerty 3-pointer gave TMC a 71-70 edge at 3:37, setting up what would be a fantastic finish.

Two Michael Hernandez foul shots brought the Toros to within 73-72 with 1:16 left, and two Jamel Ward free throws gave CSUDH a 74-73 lead with just nine ticks remaining.

TMC's leading scorer on the night, Ryan Zamroz, then drained the last two of his 19 points to give the visitors a 75-74 lead with 1.6 left on the clock.

After inbounding the ball to a waiting Rodney Yearby at halfcourt, Yearby quickly dished to an oncoming Toliver 28 feet from the bucket, but his prayer bounced off the back of the rim as the horn sounded, dealing CSUDH its first loss of the year.

Smith finished with 18 points to lead the Toros, while Hernandez chipped in 13 on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, and 5-of-6 makes from the foul stripe.

The Toros dominated the glass to a 33-to-18 advantage, but TMC, which shot nearly 50% from 3-point land coming in, nailed half its long-range shots in tonight's win after hitting 54.9% from the field.

CSUDH will enjoy a two-week hiatus before resuming action as Vanguard visits the Torodome on Monday, December 22, with first tip set for 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
