UC San Diego Claims CCAA Title With 3-1 Win Over Cal State Dominguez Hills

La Jolla, CA -- Host UC San Diego came out of its offensive funk when it counted most, tallying three goals in the CCAA Championship game to take a 3-1 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Triton Field to claim the conference title.  Sophomore midfielder Melissa Livergood netted the lone score fo the Toros, who await their fate at the hands of the NCAA committee, which will determine the six teams that qualify for the NCAA Tournament that starts next week.

Being the first to post on the board at 9:23, the Tritons Natasha Belak-Berger took advantage of a break in the Toros defense as she served a pass to Anne Wethe, who one-timed the pass over CSUDH's Alyssa Congdon to bring the score to 1-0.

The Tritons secured an insurance goal at 30:30 as Sarah McTigue completed an across the field cross to the waiting feet of Courtney Capobianca, who used the opportunity to go head-to-head with Congdon. Coming out to attempt to stop the shot proved futile as Capabianco lobbed her shot into the upper left post for Triton goal number two.

Attempting to bring the game to the Tritons' side of the field in the second half, CSUDH's Yvonne Vasquez took advantage of two fast breaks - the first at 46:37 - to try and notch the Toros their first goal as her first shot attempt became a near goal as Triton keeper Jessica McGovern was forced to make a diving save.

At 62:33 the Toros rode Vasquez's momentum to a score as Jessica Murphy grabbed a loose throw-in and drove towards the goal.  Murphy then flicked a quick pass to Melissa Livergood who was posted at the top of box, after which McGovern came too far up and left the posts open, giving Livergood a clear shot and CSUDH's first goal of the game.

Only a few minutes later at 67:52, however, the Tritons expanded their lead yet again as Belak-Berger took advantage of a penalty kick inside the box for Triton goal number three, accounting for the contest's final tally to give the host Tritons the CCAA Championship.

"The first half we let San Diego get in their rhythm too much and we allowed them to feel too comfortable," says head coach Joe Flanagan, obviously disappointed.  "They are a team you cannot give a two-goal lead to.  We had some good oppourtunites in the second half, one that gave us our goal. To win a championship in the CCAA you have to play for 90 minutes and we only played for 45."

For their efforts this weekend, Melanie DeSalvo joined Livergood, Murphy and Vasquez on the All-CCAA Tournament Team.

Hoping their CCAA semifinal win over Sonoma State on Friday -- which gave CSUDH a sweep of the Seawolves, who were ranked No. 6 in the Far West Region entering the conference tournament - was enough to keep them where they began the weekend, at No. 5, CSUDH, now 13-9, will await its fate for the NCAA Tournament as the qualifying teams, seeds and sites will be announced tomorrow.
