Toros Unlucky in 3-1 Regular Season Finale Loss at CS San Bernardino

Box Score
San Bernardino, CA -- Emotions ran high for the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote women's soccer team as it honored its seniors in a pregame ceremony, and benefited from a Toro own goal to take a 3-1 win in the regular season finale.  Freshman Jessica Murphy notched the lone goal of the game for CSUDH, who dropped to 12-8, 9-5 CCAA, and will enter next week's CCAA Tournament in La Jolla as the No. 4 seed, taking on top-seeded Sonoma State in the early game at 4:30 pm on Friday, November 7.

The victory enabled the Coyotes to finish the regular season 10-5-5 overall and 7-4-3 in the CCAA South Division, and will look for some help in getting into the regional since the Toros and Sonoma State are ranked ahead of the No. 7 Coyotes in the West Region. Dominguez Hills and Sonoma State have both advanced to the CCAA conference tournament along with San Francisco State and UC San Diego.

The Coyotes had been winless against the Toros in their last seven meetings dating back to 2004.  Earlier this year, the Toros won 1-0 with a goal in the final two seconds of regulation.

CSUSB freshman Unity Bedingfield was involved in both the match-deciding goal and the third goal.

Leading 1-0 after a header by Jenna Sanchez from a direct kick from senior Sophia Bruins, the Coyotes made it 2-0 just 50 seconds before the end of the first half when a crossing pass from Bedingfield was inadvertently redirected into the Toros goal for an own goal.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Toros cut the lead in half at 2-1 when Jessica Murphy lined a hard shot into the upper net from beyond the 18-yard-line for her 12th goal of the season after collecting a free kick from Cassie McKay.

Then in the 66th minute, Bedingfield was the right place at the right time, seeing a deflected ball drop at her feet in front of the goal, she chipped over the keeper's head to make it 3-1 Coyotes.

The Coyotes outshot the Toros 12-7. Alyssa Congdon made five saves in goal for the Toros while senior Leslie Rhodes was in goal for 88 minutes for the Coyotes and made four saves while senior Shawna-Rei Kam came on to make one save in the final 1:30.

CSUDH and Sonoma State hook up for the second meeting of the year after the Toros took a 6-2 decision in Carson on October 5.
