Murphy's Double Leads Toros to 6-2 Dominance Over #12 Sonoma State

Box Score
Carson, CA -- Freshman Jessica Murphy scored two goals as Cal State Dominguez Hills scored the last five goals of the game, including four in a dominating second half, in a 6-2 win over 12th-ranked Sonoma State this morning in Toro Stadium.

The Toros notched the game's first score as Melanie DeSalvo took a feed from Paige Peel at the 5:40 mark, and lofted her shot over SSU keeper Courtney Grixti for a quick 1-0 lead.

Momentum, however, quickly changed jerseys as Tracy Webster connected for the equalizer at 9:46, keeping the game tied 1-1 until late in the first half.  After SSU took the lead on a Kayce Brawley score, Peel took her turn scoring after lofting a floater from about 30 feet just over Grixti's outstretched arms, knotting the game at 2-2.

After intermission, the Toros turned on all offensive cylinders, scoring four goals to put the game away.  Murphy started the deluge after taking a through ball from Kelly Matosian, and beating Grixti near post at 55:13 for the eventual game winner, after which she took a deep punt from Toro keeper Alyssa Congdon, and again got the better of Grixti in the 70th minute for her second goal of the game.

Less than two minutes later, Karina Jahn notched the first goal of her 2008 season after taking a Matosian throw in and beating Grixti for a 5-2 lead.  Senior Yvonne Vasquez then concluded the scoring after rebounding her own shot in the mouth of the Seawolf goal, tapping the ball in for the 6-2 final.

Congdon notched 7 saves in the contest after withstanding an offensive-minded Seawolf team as SSU out-shot CSUDH 19-15, including 10-5 in the first half.  A physical contest, the Toros were whistled for 15 fouls compared to Sonoma's 6, while both teams tallied 4 corners apiece.

The Toros, now 8-5, 6-2 CCAA and winners of four-consecutive meets, take to the road next weekend to battle Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus, before returning home to host UC San Diego on October 15, with first kick set for 7:00 pm in Toro Stadium at the Home Depot Center's Track and Field Facility.
