Cal State Dominguez Hills Fills Its SAAC With Holiday Spirit

SAAC during its 2006 hospital visit
Carson, CA -- With the 2007 calendar year nearing its end, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has a number of events planned to bring cheer to its ever-growing community this holiday season.

Following the first-ever “Toros Talent Show” and participation in the “Mayor Jim Dear Turkey Give-A-Way” last month, which benefited the Make-A-Wish Foundation and local Carson residents, respectively, SAAC members will team up with fellow CCAA school Cal State L.A. at the L.A. Regional Food Bank on Wednesday, December 12.  At the Food Bank, the Toros and Golden Eagles will voluntarily package and sort holiday food boxes to distribute to needy families in downtown Los Angeles from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

One week later, the Toros will make their annual visit to the Harbor-UCLA Hospital, bringing presents and holiday cheer to the hospital's children.  Partnering with Toros Athletics partner Island Wireless, which will supply a good number of presents, the visit on Wednesday, December 19, will be from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  In December 2006, CSUDH Athletics Director Patrick Guillen donned the Toro mascot outfit, much to the amusement of both the children and the hospital's staff.

Then, on Saturday, January 12, 2008, SAAC will hold its 2nd-annual “Student-Athlete Ball,” where all proceeds will go toward the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the CCAA Conference's primary beneficiary of its 11-school SAAC contingent.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation, with headquarters located in Phoenix, Arizona, grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.  It is the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 76 chapters in the United States and its territories, and 27 international affiliates on 5 continents. With the help of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted more than 150,000 wishes to children around the world since 1980, averaging one dream-come-true every 41 minutes.

The 2006-07 school year marked the fourth year of the Make-A-Wish Foundation fundraising campaign for both Division II and the CCAA.  The CCAA SAAC raised $9,839.53, which ranks fifth out of all Division II conferences nationwide.  For the third year in a row, the CCAA had 100% participation rate from its institutions, one of only three conferences to accomplish that goal this year.  The NCAA raised $208,022 overall, more than doubling its fundraising goal for the year.
