SAN MARCOS -- No. 4 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills continues to look for its offense after suffering a 4-0 loss to No. 5 Cal State Monterey Bay in the late game of today's NCAA West Region, hosted on the campus of top-seeded Cal State San Marcos.
This is the third-consecutive game in which CSUDH has been shut out, forcing the Toros into an elimination game tomorrow at 12:30 pm against No. 8 seed Hawai'i Hilo, which fell 9-1 to the Cougars in a 6-inning, run rule contest.
CSUDH's current string of 21 scoreless innings is the second-longest such streak, with the program-record 27-inning scoreless streak set during the 2015 season.
The Otters and Toros last met at the CCAA Tournament May 6, with the Toros earning the win on a walk-off by
Dyoni Garcia.
CSUMB exacted its revenge this afternoon after scoring a pair of runs in the first inning, and single runs in the second and fifth innings in the eventual 4-0 victory.
The Otters managed just four hits, but drew seven walks with just one strikeout to put constant pressure on the Toro pitching contingent of starter
Ashley Ogata, who gave up five free passes, and
Audrey Gallegos.
The Toros were limited to just three hits themselves, failing to send a runner to second base over the first four innings of play.
In the fifth,
Mireya Rico began the frame with a single to left field, but CSUMB starter Jordan Knutson retired the next three Toros to escape the would-be rally.
Savanna Kastigar and Garcia notched the other hits for the Cardinal and Gold, who face a must-win contest tomorrow.
