INDIANAPOLIS -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team has earned the No. 4 seed in the NCAA West Regional tournament, it was announced by the NCAA committee this morning.
Owners of a 36-22 overall record, the Toros will face No. 5 seed Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday, May 14, at 3 pm, in a rematch of the CCAA Championship tournament in which CSUDH took down the Otters on walk-off blast by
Dyoni Garcia.
The sub-regional will take place at the CSUSM Softball Field on the campus of Cal State San Marcos, which was afforded the top overall seed and will host one sub-regional.
The top-seeded Cougars will face No. 8 seed Hawai'i-Hilo to kick off the sub-regional, with first pitch set for 12 pm.
No. 2 seed Cal State East Bay, which earned the CCAA Tournament Championship, will host the
second sub-regional and welcome No. 3 seed Concordia University Irvine, No. 6 seed Biola, and No. 7 seed Western Washington.
The Toros closed the regular season with nine-straight wins, but needed late-inning heroics by Garcia in their CCAA opening game against the Otters after CSUMB tied the game at 6-6 with five runs in the top of the seventh inning.
CSUDH then was shut out over its next two games by CSUSM and Cal Poly Humboldt, and will have five days to get back on track before facing an Otter squad hungry to avenge its walk-off loss.
The Toros own a 3-2 advantage over Monterey Bay after its league tournament win, and boasts seven All-CCAA selections, an offense with seven players hitting over .300, five with at least 30 RBI, and five with a slugging percentage north of .450.
Its pitching staff also features a trio of hurlers who combined for 35 of the team's 36 wins, and will be well-rested as the national stage begins Thursday.
