CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills enjoyed a potent offense and stellar pitching and defense this afternoon to kick off a four-game series hosting Cal State San Marcos, routing the Cougars by a 14-3 score.
Five Toros went for at least two hits in the game, led by three hits each from
Nigel Buckley (pictured) and
Alex Sepulveda.
The Toro offense raced to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Sepulveda roped a bases-loaded RBI single up the middle, which was followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Angel Cortez one batter later.
CSUDH then scored a touchdown two innings later, the big blows coming on a bases-clearing double from
Zac Ragland, RBI singles by Cortez and
Eric Arreola and RBI doubles from
Tristan Usher and Buckley.
After the Cougars answered with two runs in the fifth inning, the Toros put the game away in the sixth with four runs, with Julian Camarena delivering a bases-loaded double to the right-center gap to plate three for a 13-2 lead.
Up 13-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, Usher belted a solo home run over the right-center field wall to complete the onslaught.
Jordan Townley tossed 6.0 innings to pick up the win (2-2), with a pair of relievers in
Jake Estrada and
Ben Saitz blanking the Cougars over the game's final three innings.
Ragland, Usher and Arreola also enjoyed multi-hit efforts, with Ragland and Camarena combining for six runs batted in.
The two teams play the middle two games of the four-game series tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch of game one set for 12 noon on Toro Field.
