Toros Drop Two to Cal State San Marcos

CARSON -- Looking to continue its offense from yesterday's route of visiting Cal State San Marcos, host Cal State Dominguez Hills scored just six total runs en route to dropping 5-1 and 7-5 decisions to the visiting Cougars in this afternoon's twinbill at Toro Field.

Quinn Johnson hammered a solo shot in the nightcap for his second dinger of the day to bring the Toros to within a pair of runs, but it was too little, too late as CSUDH fell to 14-18 overall and 6-13 in CCAA play after dropping their fourth game in their last five contests.

After scoring just one run in the opener, the Toros took a quick 1-0 lead in the nightcap on a Julio Camarena RBI single in te second inning.

CSUSM rallied with three runs to take a 3-1 lead after their fifth-inning at-bat, but CSUDH answered with three runs in the fifth inning to retake the lead courtesy of an Alex Sepulveda 2RBI single and a Jarrett Segura RBI double.

The Cougars, however, answered right back with four runs over the next two innings to take a 7-4 lead, withstanding Johnson's solo shot to take the twinbill sweep.

Johnson, Nigel Buckley and Sepulveda knocked two hits apiece in the loss, with Julian Castro taking the loss to fall to 2-2, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing three earned runs.

The opener saw the Cougars take an early 1-0 lead in the third inning, with their staff keeping the Toros off the board for the first six innings.

In the seventh, however, Johnson went yard to knot the game at 1-1.  That elation didn't last long as the visitors replied with three in the eighth and one in the ninth to take the opener, limiting the Toro bats to just six hits.

The teams conclude the four-game series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 12 noon.
