Tellez Sparks Offense in Sweep of Gators to Kick Off Penultimate CCAA Series

SAN FRANCISCO -- Sophomore infielder Andrea Tellez enjoyed a 4-for-8 performance including a home run, adding four RBI and three runs scored to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills to sweep of host San Francisco State by 14-4 and 6-5 scores, the Toros' third-straight win and fifth in their last six games.

CSUDH improves to 29-20 overall and 11-15 in CCAA play.  The Toros currently sit in sixth place in the CCAA standings, three games behind the Gators and Cal State San Bernardino with six games left in their regular season schedule, and 10 games each for both SFSU and CSUSB due to CSUDH's bye week coming at the end of the regular season.

The opener saw the Toros jump to a commanding 10-0 lead after their fifth-inning at-bat, the big blow coming on Tellez's 3-run blast in the fourth inning that accounted for three of the frame's runs to give CSUDH a 6-0 lead.

One inning later, Makayla Bishop cleared the bases with a 3RBI double, giving the Toros the opportunity to end the game via the run rule with three outs and two or less runs scored in SFSU's fifth-inning at-bat.

The Gators refused to cooperative, earning three runs with a 2RBI triple and RBI single to make it 10-3 Toros.

That's where the score remained until the top of the seventh when the visitors scored four runs, with pinch-hitter Michaela bringing home a pair with a liner down the left field line, and a Gator error contributing to one of the last two runs of the frame.

Ashley Ogata earned the win after 4.0 scoreless innings of one-hit ball, with Brook Umali earning the save after throwing the final 3.0 innings.

Savanna Kastigar, Mireya Rico and Dyoni Garcia joined Tellez with two hits as CSUDH erupted for 12 in the win.

The Toros continued their hot bats in the nightcap, scoring six runs in the first three innings of play.

After the Gators gifted the visitors a run in the first, Tellez continued to rope, this time a double down the right field line to bring home Rico before an RBI groundout put the Toros up 2-1.

One inning later, Rico hammered the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for a 3-run blast for a 6-1 lead.

That proved timely as the Gators answered with three runs in the bottom of the third and a solo run in the fourth to cut the score to 6-5.

That would be enough for the Toro bullpen as Audrey Gallegos tossed the final 4.1 innings in relief to pick up the win.

Ashley Goodale, Marisa Dominguez and Tellez added two hits each to bolster Rico's 3-hit effort.

The two teams conclude the CCAA series tomorrow morning, with first pitch of game one set for 11 am at SFSU Softball Field.
