SAN FRANCISCO -- One day after belting a 3-run home run in the opening game of a doubleheader, sophomore
Andrea Tellez experienced deja vu all over again after launching another 3-run blast to open today's twinbill at San Francisco State to power Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 6-1 win over the Gators.
In the nightcap, Toros
Makayla Bishop (pictured) paced the offense with a 5-for-5 performance while
Torie Au drove in five runs as the Toros scored seven runs in the eighth inning to take a 16-9 win in the nightcap to give CSUDH its first CCAA series sweep of the year and its fifth-straight win.
With the sweep, the Toros vault into third place in the CCAA standings, with the top five teams qualifying for the league tournament in two weeks.
In the opener,
Marisa Dominguez began the scoring in the first inning with a double to right center to bring home
Ashley Goodale, before scoring herself on another double, this time by Au, for a 2-0 lead.
After the Gators cut their deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the frame, Tellez came to bat in the third inning with two on and launched a moon shot to left center to give CSUDH a 5-1 lead.
The Toros added another two innings later after a SFSU wild pitch and RBI ground out brought hom pinch-runner
Alyssa Martinez for the last run of the game.
Dominguez led the hit parade with two as CSUDH pounded 10 in the game, providing an offensive harbinger for the nightcap.
Ogata tossed a complete-game gem to improve to 12-4 on the eary, scattering five hits and fanning three with just one run scored.
In the late game, the Gators took an early 3-1 lead after one inning of play, only to have the Toros respond with a flurry.
In the third inning, RBI singles by Au and
Mireya Rico gave the Toros a 4-3 lead, with a Goodale RBI single one inning later putting the Toros up 5-3.
SFSU, however, replied with four runs to take a 7-5 lead after 5.0 innings of play, giving the hosts a chance to send the SFSU faithful home happy.
The Toros had other ideas as the combination of Au and Rico knotted the game with RBI knocks in the sixth inning, with Bishop and Goodale RBI singles putting the Toros up 9-7 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Gators put up their own fight by scoring two runs in their at-bat, setting up the fantastic finish for the Cardinal and Gold.
In that eighth inning, the Toros strung together five hits for seven runs, the big blows coming on a 3-run double by Dominguez and Au 2-run blast for the eventual 16-9 win.
Goodale, Dominguez and
Gaby Gandara's three hits each added to CSUDH's 22 total, with three RBI each by Rico and Dominguez and two each by Bishop and Goodale were too much for SFSU to overcome.
Ogata came in in relief to toss 4.0 innings for the win, her third of the series in which CSUDH outscored SFSU 42-19, its best offensive series of the year.
The Toros return home to conclude the regular season next week, hosting Stanislaus State on Friday, April 24, with first pitch of game one set for 1 pm on Toro Diamond.
