Defense Takes Bite Out of SFSU's Chomp City in 68-46 Rout

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State Dominguez Hills limited host San Francisco State to a paltry .250 shooting percentage from the floor en route to a commanding 68-46 win, led by 14 points each from Jalen Brown (pictured) and Jayden Johnson, who combined for five of CSUDH's eight 3-point makes.

This marks the fourth-consecutive win for the red-hot Toros, who remain alone in 2nd place in the CCAA standings with a critical match-up looming at undefeated and No. 3 ranked Cal State East Bay on Saturday.

The Toros, who improved to 16-5 overall and 12-3 in the CCAA, enjoyed a tremendous first 20 minutes of play, taking a 38-28 lead on the Gators while hitting 42.4% of its shots from the field including a sizzling 58.3% from downtown.

Conversely, CSUDH held the Gators to just 36% shooting from the floor and 33.3% from 3-point land, while pulling down six more offensive boards which helped the Toros to a comfortable 28 to 10 advantage in points in the paint and 16 second chance points.

CSUDH clamped down on defense even more after the break as SFSU made just 16.1% of its attempts, and less of its 3-point tries (14.3%).  The Toro offense cooled off a bit by sinking 40% from the floor while misfiring on 5 of its 6 attempts from downtown, but a hefty 27-17 rebounding edge kept the Gators at bay.

Up by 10 entering the second half, the Toros went on a 13-0 run, with Brown accounting for six of the points.

The lead hovered around the 20-point mark through the half's first 10 minutes, growing to as much as 28 points at 66-38 after a Brown flush which followed his own steal with just under 5:00 minutes left in regulation.

SFSU brought its deficit to 22 points at the 2:02 mark, prompting a Toro timeout.  That break paid immediate dividends as Promise Madubugu corralled a CSUDH miss and converted a tip-in to bring CSUDH's lead back up to 24 with just 1:36 left on the clock, in the eventual 68-46 win.

Dasean Stevens added 13 and JJ Mitchell 11 to round out the four double-figure scorers for the Cardinal and Gold, with Stevens pulling down a game-high nine boards as the Toros out-rebounded the hosts 49 to 34.

The Toros will look to hand Cal State East Bay its first loss of the year and avenge an 89-82 setback on December 19 in Carson, as the top two teams in the CCAA match up in the CCAA Game of the Week.

Earlier tonight, the Pioneers crushed Cal State L.A., 102-79.
