Toros Survive Overtime Thriller Over Coyotes to Close Regular Season, 90-89

Box Score CARSON -- Looking to keep their edge heading into next week's CCAA postseason tournament, Cal State Dominguez Hills took every shot visiting Cal State San Bernardino had as the Coyotes were fighting for their postseason lives, and survived an overtime barn burner to send its seniors out with a victory.

DeSean Stevens led all scorers with 26 points as the Toros improve to 21-7 overall, and 17-5 in the CCAA.

CSUDH hit 45.9% of its shots from the floor while holding CSUSB to just 36.5% on its attempts.  The Coyotes, however, were more efficient from downtown (43.3% to 40.9%) and converted more free throws than the hosts (22 to 13).

The Toros raced out to a 16-6 lead after a smooth 3-pointer by Za-Ontay Boothman at the 16:14 mark, before the second of two Aidan Fowler 3-pointers knotted the game at 21-all, six of his team-high 25 points.

CSUDH would answer with nine-consecutive points to extend its lead, earning a double-figure advantage on a JJ Mitchell flush with 2:02 left in the half, before setting for a 52-46 edge entering the half.

The second half saw four ties and lead changes, with the Yotes forging a comeback behind a 15-to-3 advantage in points from downtown.

With the Toros up 79-74 after a David Cheatom jumper with 46 seconds left, the Coyotes hit a pair of free throws and then forced a turnover, leading to a layup with 28 seconds remaining.

Sanders was fouled and converted two free throws to put the Toros up three, but Fowler drained a 3-pointer with just three seconds left, not enough time for the Toros to get up a shot attempt.

In overtime, Sanders continued to impose his skill set, muscling his way inside for a layup and then draining a 3-pointer to give CSUDH an 86-81 lead.

The Coyotes drew to within 88-86 after another 3-pointer and looked to tie the score with three seconds left, but Sanders left his mark on the defensive end as well by rejecting a would-be game-tying attempt.

Wesley Trevino provided a spark off the bench with six rebounds, five points and two huge blocks under the Coyote rim.

Sanders scored 22 points and Cheatom 10 in the win, with Stevens pulling down eight boards and Mitchell seven.

CSUDH will continue its season in the CCAA playoffs on Friday at 5:30 pm, and will face the winner of No. 3 Cal Poly Pomona and No. 6 Cal State San Marcos.
