Box Score CARSON -- Having already clinched the No. 2 seed and a bye in next week's upcoming CCAA postseason tournament, Cal State Dominguez Hills ran into a hungry Cal Poly Pomona team fighting for its postseason life and dropped a 72-66 decision to the Broncos tonight in the Torodome.
David Cheatom led all players with 21 points and nine boards in the loss.
The Toros connected for just 32.8% from the field in an effort that lacked some of the urgency seen in the past four contests that saw CSUDH win all four.
Conversely, the Broncos hit 42.9% of their attempts from the floor that included 39.3% from 3-point land (11-of-28), making six more triples than the Toros.  CSUDH's free throw acumen kept them in the contest late (21-of-25) as the hosts crept to within four points midway through the fourth quarter, only to have the Broncos connect on timely free throws down the stretch.
The Toros raced out an early 7-2 lead after an old-fashioned 3-point play by Cheatom, only to have the Broncos answer with a 19-8 run to take a six-point lead at the 8:42 mark.
That advantage hit double digits (31-20) three minutes later, increasing to as much as 37-22 after a fast-break 3-pointer.
After five-consecutive points by
Tomi Adesiji brought the Toros to within 10, a pair of Cheatom freebies to end the half gave CSUDH momentum, sending the Cardinal and Gold into the locker room trailing by just eighit points at 37-29.
The Toros brought the energy to begin the second half, with a pair of
Luke Lin baskets sandwiching a Cheatom tip-in to bring CSUDH to within 39-35 with just over two minutes elapsed in the period.
CPP, however, answered with a 20-13 run to again push its lead to double digits (59-48) at the 10:02 mark, a lead that grew to 64-50 nearly a minute later.
After Lin converted the second of two free throw attempts and
Josiah Sanders converted a layup,
Dasean Stevens scored seven of the Toros' next nine points to bring CSUDH to within 66-62 with 5:23 left in regulation.
The Broncos, however, would use a quick basket and four made free throws down the stretch to keep the Toros' at arm's length the rest of the way in the eventual 72-66 final.
Stevens and Lin both scored 13 points in the loss that saw just one tie and two lead changes.
CSUDH will conclude its regular season on Saturday as it hosts Cal State San Bernardino, one of five teams fighting for the final four berths in the CCAA tournament. Prior to the game, the Toros will honor its senior class.
