Box Score CHICO -- Sophomore
Bryanne Lopez-Woods shot a blistering 71.4% from the floor en route to a team-high 21-point outburst, but host Chico State built an 18-point first half lead and made it stand up as the Wildcats downed the Toros by a 93-74 final in an afternoon tilt in Acker Gym.
CSUDH falls to 2-9 overall and 2-4 in CCAA play.
Kylee Edgar scored the game's first two points as the Toros kept the game close in the early going, trailing just 10-9 at the 5:56 mark of the first quarter. The Wildcats, however, then took control of the period, outscoring the visitors 19-10 the rest of the frame to take a 29-19 lead after one.
It didn't get better for the Toros in the second period as Chico State kept its 10-point lead at 39-29 at the 6:09 mark, before extending its edge to 21 at 50-29 four minutes later, taking a commanding 52-34 lead into intermission.
The Toros found their footing after the break, keeping pace with the co-CCAA leading Wildcats thanks to hot shooting from
A'moree Ferrel,Â
Bryanne Lopez-Wood, and three triples fromÂ
Zanna Hurst in the frame, the last 3-pointer keeping CSUDH's deficit under 20 points.
Lopez Wood continued her scoring surge in the final frame, with her layup to open the period bringing the Toros to with 74-57 at the 9:03 mark. Â
CSUC, however, would push its lead to 20 at 80-60 two minutes later, only to have the Toros answer with six-consecutive points to give the visitors momentum after two
Leilani Abraham free throws and baskets by Edgar and Lopez-Wood found the bottom of the net.
After the hosts answered with a made bucket and free throw, a Lopez-Wood basket preceded two Abraham jumpers as the Toros climbed to within 83-72 with 1:55 left in regulation.
CSUDH's comeback attempt, however, would fall short as the Wildcats went on a 10-2 run the rest of the frame en route to the 93-74 decision.
Edgar finished with 17 points and Ferrel 16 to pace the Cardinal and Gold, with Edgar's 10 boards tying for game-high honors and giving her the Toros' lone double-double of the contest.
The largest discrepancy came at the charity stripe as the Wildcats went to the line 36 times with 27 makes, compared to just eight trips for the visitors, who made half of their attempts.
The Toros return home on Thursday, January 8, to host CCAA-newcomer UC Merced, with first tip set for 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
