Box Score CARSON -- Sophomore
Josiah Sanders led Cal State Dominguez Hills with 20 points that included a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point land and a near-perfect 9-of-10 from the free throw line as the Toros shot 58.1% from the floor and 63.6% from downtown en route to an 83-77 win over a game Chico State squad, CSUDH's second-straight win and seventh in its last eight contests.
The win keeps the Toros tied for 2nd in the CCAA with a 10-3 mark (14-5 overall), while Chico falls to 4-9 in the CCAA and 6-12 overall.
As has been the case nearly all season, the Toros enjoyed a balanced offense that saw five players score at least 10 points in Sanders, DaSean Stevens (14), Jaden Johnston (12),
Jalen Brown (11), and
David Cheatom (10). CSUDH also enjoyed a huge edge at the charity stripe, converting 19 compared to just seven for the visitors.
The Wildcats took it to the Toros early, doubling their lead at 10-5 just under five minutes into the contest. A 13-7 run led by a flurry of triples gave CSUDH the lead at 18-17, the last three points coming on one of Sanders' 3-point makes.
CSUDH pushed its lead to double digits to 38-28 on a
John Solomon jumper at the 2:00 minute mark before Chico trimmed its deficit in half and entered by break trailing 40-35.
Inspired by a halftime presentation that honored the back-to-back CCAA Champion Toro men's soccer team, CSUDH came out firing in the second half, pushing the lead to 12 at 49-37 on a Stevens triple. The Wildcats, however, would go on a 15-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 52-51 and seize momentum.
With the Toros trailing 56-55 at the 11:28 mark, CSUDH went on a 14-6 run of its own to take a 69-62 lead after a
Za-Ontay Boothman 3-pointer, with Sanders, Johnston and Stevens putting the game away with clutch shooting down the stretch.
Despite enjoying a whopping 48 to 14 advantage in points in the paint, the Wildcats couldn't stop CSUDH's hot hand from outside as the Toros sweep the season series.
CSUDH will look to make it three-straight on Saturday at 3 pm as Cal Poly Humboldt visits the Torodome, tied with the Toros in conference play. Â
