Box Score ARCATA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills junior wing
Jalen Brown led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field that included 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, but host Humboldt State outscored the Toros 12-6 in overtime to escape with a thrilling 97-91 upset win.
In front of an announced crowd of 419, the atmosphere was fitting of a battle between two teams both fighting for the top spot it the CCAA.
After the teams split the game's first 20 points, a
John Solomon triple at the 13:51 mark gave the visitors a 13-10 edge, which the Toros held until the 'Jacks regained the lead on Brandon Bento-Jackson triple three minutes later, which he followed with a free throw to give him the rare 4-point play and Humboldt a 23-21 lead.
Dasean Stevens answered with a triple of his own for a 24-23 Toro lead, with six-straight points from
David Cheatom after an old-fashioned 3-point play and 3-pointer giving CSUDH a 7-point cushion at 30-23 with 8:37 left in the first half.
The 'Jacks would respond with a fury, however, outscoring the Toros 28-11 over the next seven minutes to take a 51-41 lead before taking a 53-45 edge into the locker room.
Brown scored the second half's first four points, with
Josiah Sanders pulling down his own miss for a put-back basket to bring the Toros to within 53-51 with just under two minutes elapsed in the frame.
CSUDH took its first lead of the half at 59-58 after a Brown fast-break bucket, with a deep Stevens triple after a 'Jack miss pushing the Toro edge to four at 62-58.
The teams continued to trade baskets, tying at 79-79 on a Sanders flush with 5:11 remaining in regulation and eventually at 85-85 to send the game into overtime.
In the extra frame, the hosts maintained a 3-point edge until Brown brought the Toros to within 93-91 with :08 left in overtime. With the Toros forced to foul after not being able to force turnovers, the 'Jacks drained their final four free throws down the stretch to take the hard-fought win.
Stevens chipped in 17 points, Cheatom 16 and Sanders 14 to give the Toros four double-figure scorers, with
JJ Mitchell grabbing six boards to lead the Cardinal and Gold and tie for game-high honors.
CSUDH travels to Chico State on Sunday, January 4, looking for a road split, with tip set for 3:00 pm in Acker Gym.
