SEASIDE -- Senior
Anela Thomas paced Cal State Dominguez Hills with team highs of 12 points and six rebounds, but host Cal State Monterey Bay used a huge second-half advantage to run away with a 69-49 win tonight in the Kelp Bed.
The Toros, who were outscored by 16 after the break, fall to 3-11 overall and 3-6 in the CCAA.
The Otters scored the game's first six points before
Leilani Abraham's free throw 3:15 into the quarter put the Toros on the board.Â
CSUSM answered right back, going on a 5-0 run to take an 11-1 lead, only to have a Thomas layup, Kylee Egard jumper,
Bryanne Lopez-Wood hook shot and two Lopez-Wood free throws bring CSUDH to within 11-9 before the visitors ended the frame down 17-14.
CSUDH kept it close in the second quarter, getting to within two twice, the first at 20-18 on a Thomas driving layup 2:32 seconds into the period, and again with just under three minutes remaining in the half on another Thomas bucket, finding itself down 30-26 entering the break.
The Otters began to take charge to start the third quarter, increasing their lead to 37-29 two minutes in, before an Abraham bucket three minutes later brought the Toros to within 39-36.
That's when CSUSM again took charge, going on an 11-6 run over the final five minutes to head into the final frame up 50-42.
Monterey Bay pushed its lead to double figures with the first two points of the quarter, nearly doubling that with an 8-1 run to go up 60-43 with 5:59 left in regulation.
CSUDH would get no closer, falling 69-49 on the afternoon.
Lopez-Wood and Edgar each finished with seven points, with Edgar chipping in six rebounds of her own.
The Toros shot just 35.6% from the floor and were out-rebounded by 11 in the loss, their fourth setback in five games.
The Cardinal and Gold will look to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon as they visit Cal State San Marcos for a 1 pm tip.
