SAN MARCOS -- Cal State Dominguez Hills sophomore and San Diego native
Zanna Hurst dropped 17 points including four 3-pointers to lead five Toros in double-figure scoring as CSUDH upended host Cal State San Marcos this afternoon in the Sports Center.
Winners of two of their last three contests, this victory lifts the Toros to 4-11 overall and 4-6 in CCAA play and moves them into 8th place in the conference standings.
Hurst began the scoring with a 3-pointer 50 seconds in the contest, and pushed CSUDH's lead to 7-2 on another triple four minutes later.
The hosts whittled their deficit to just 13-11 with under 2:00 left in the quarter, but another Hurst trey and
Camryn Washington layup with four seconds left gave the Toros an 18-12 lead after one.
Hurst continued the second quarter where she left the first, nailing another deep three to give CSUDH its largest lead at 21-12 to open the stanza. After the Cougars went on a 7-0 run to get to within two,
Tiara Jones converted a bucket in the paint, with Hurst again hitting from deep for a 26-22 Toro lead at the 6:10 mark.
CSUSM answered with a 7-2 surge to take a 29-28 edge before entering the half up 34-31.
The hosts kept their lead around the 4-6 points after intermission, until a Jones layup at the 3:36 mark knotted the contest at 49 apiece.
Kyle Edgar capitalized on that momentum with an old-fashioned 3-point play, with an
Anela Thomas layup giving CSUDH a 54-49 lead a minute and a half later to provide the impetus for the Toros' 57-53 lead after three quarters.
The hosts regrouped to begin the final quarter, tying the game at 63-63 at the 7:08 mark.
The two teams would tie twice more, the last at 69-69 four minutes later, until a pair of Jones free throws ignited the Toro offense, with Edgar scoring CSUDH's next four points to push the Toros to the brink of victory with a 75-71 lead with 1:07 left in regulation.
The Toros then forced a Cougar turnover before collecting two offensive boards to put more pressure on the hosts, with Edgar and Hurst scoring the final five points on free throws to secure the 82-76 win.
CSUDH committed a season-low eight turnovers, with Bryanna Lopez-Wood leading the charge with seven assists against just one turnover.
Edgar finished with 15, Thomas and Jones with 14 and Washington with 12 in the balanced win, with Thomas pulling down a team-best eight boards.
The Toros play at crosstown-rival Cal State L.A. on Thursday, January 22, before welcoming the Golden Eagles to the Torodome two days later.
