Box Score SEASIDE -- Sophomore
Josiah Sanders was nearly unstoppable after draining 10-of-12 field goals and 4-of-5 free throws en route to a team-high 25 points as Cal State Dominguez Hills toppled host Cal State Monterey Bay, 90-77, to pick up its fourth-straight win.
The Toros shot a sizzling 57.4% from the floor in the win, giving head coach
Steve Becker a successful homecoming at his alma mater.
Sanders began his night with a flurry, converting an old-fashioned 3-point play after which
David Cheatom and
Jalen Brown followed suit by scoring the next six points for a quick 9-0 lead just four minutes into the game.
The Otters would knot the contest at 11-11 three minutes later, only for
JJ Mitchell answer with a basket and Desean Stevens with five-straight points of his own, before Sanders put his own exclamation point on the 9-0 run with a monstrous slam dunk midway through the period for a 20-11 lead.
A triple by
Za-Ontay Boothman four minutes later brought CSUDH's lead up to 13 at 30-17 with 6:15 left in the half, with the Toros settling for a 37-30 lead entering the break.
CSUDH continued to put pressure on the hosts, building their cushion to 49-35 on a Sanders jumper five minutes into the second half, and up to 15 at 58-43 on a Stevens triple at the 12:24 mark.
Cheatom then took his turn to give CSUDH its largest lead after his layup put the Toros up by 16 at 69-53, all but putting the game away with 7:26 left in regulation.
The Otters made things interesting by cutting their deficit to just eight points at 73-65 three minutes later, but a Sanders 3-pointer spurred a 17-12 run to close the game, sealing the 90-77 victory.
Sanders' 25 points was his second-most total of the year after dropping 28 points on December 19 against Cal State East Bay.Â
Brown chipped in with 17 points, Stevens 15, Cheatom 14 and Mitchell 12 to give CSUDH five double-figure scorers in the balanced attack.
The Toros also shot a respectable 73.7% from the foul line, compared to just 35% for the hosts, who misfired on 13 of 20 attempts.
CSUDH will look to make it five straight on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Cal State San Marcos for a 3 pm first tip.
