Block Party Pushes Toros to Third-Straight Win in 80-71 Decision Over Stan State

Box Score

CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills senior Dasean Stevens poured in a team-high 16 points and made his one block at the end of the game a memorable one as the Toros picked up their third-straight win in a thrilling 80-71 win over visiting Stanislaus State this afternoon in the Torodome.

CSUDH improves to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in CCAA play, while the Warriors fall to 7-7 overall and 3-5 in the CCAA.

The Toros shot 51.9% from the floor in the win to mark the fifth-consecutive game in which they made more than half of their attempts, and also dominated at the rim with seven blocks compared to just one for the Warriors, with JJ Mitchell leading the charge with two rejections.

Stevens and reigning CCAA Athlete of the Week Jalen Brown each hit from deep to begin the contest and give the Toros a quick 6-0 lead, only to have the visitors go on a 13-7 run to knot the contest with 13:27 left in the half.

The Toros answered with a John Solomon layup, Luke Lin fastbreak basket and triple by Mitchell to regain the lead for the Cardinal and Gold, with two Stevens free throws eight minutes later giving CSUDH its largest lead of the game at 34-24 at the 5:37 mark.

Stan State would close the half with a run of their own, whittling its deficit to 37-36 before Brown drained a deep 3-pointer to give the Toros a 40-36 lead entering the half.

The visitors would use their late surge to get to take the lead at 45-44 just 3:27 into the period, only to have the Toros answer with a 10-4 run to regain their lead at 54-49 five minutes later, punctuated by an emphatic flush after one of Brown's eight assists.

CSUDH's lead grew to 13 points at 71-58 after a pair of Mitchell freebies with exactly 4:00 minutes left in regulation, but the Warriors would live up to their name, going on a 10-2 run to whittle their deficit to just 5 at 73-68 with 63 seconds on the clock.

After Jayden Johnston stopped Stan State's momentum with two of his 11 points, Warrior Donjae Lindsey drove to the basket looking to get those two points back, but Stevens was up to the challenge, swatting Lindsey's attempt away which led to a David Cheatom bucket to push the Toro lead back up to double-figures, putting the game away.

Mitchell added 15 points and Brown 14 to give the Toros four double-figures scorers, with Brown's game-high eight assists playing a huge role in CSUDH's 24-15 edge in that category.

CSUDH will look to make it four in a row next week as they travel to Cal State Monterey Bay for a Thursday night tilt in the Kelp Bed.
