Jim Maier Announces Retirement as Head Softball Coach

CARSON, Calif. – After almost two decades of shaping Cal State Dominguez Hills softball into a nationally recognized program, head coach Jim Maier has announced his retirement. The longest-serving and winningest coach in program history, Maier leaves behind an enduring legacy of success, mentorship, and excellence both on and off the field.

Maier returned to the helm of Toro Softball in October 2018 and led the program for six more seasons, bringing his total tenure at CSUDH to 19 years. Under his guidance, the Toros earned seven NCAA playoff appearances, two CCAA titles, and an NCAA National Championship runner-up finish in 2022. His coaching resume boasts five All-Americans, 24 All-Region selections, and 65 All-CCAA honorees, including two CCAA Players of the Year.

A Historic 2024 Season

Maier's final season at the helm was one for the record books. The 2024 Toros set a new program record with 48 home runs en route to an NCAA West Super Regional appearance, breaking the previous record of 42 set by Maier's 2005 squad. Standout players Jay Ross and Mariah Ramirez earned All-CCAA First Team honors, as well as D2CCA and NFCA All-West Region accolades. This season further cemented Maier's ability to elevate his players and teams to elite status.

Since his return, Maier has transformed the Toros into one of the nation's premier defensive teams. CSUDH led the West Region in fielding percentage each of the past two seasons, demonstrating the discipline and skill Maier instilled in his athletes.

A Career of Excellence

Maier's first stint with the Toros began in 2001, quickly turning the program into a powerhouse. In 2003, CSUDH made its first of four consecutive NCAA playoff appearances, and in 2005, Maier was named CCAA Coach of the Year after leading the Toros to a conference championship. The 2006 squad reached the NCAA West Region Finals, marking the deepest postseason run in program history at the time. His teams remained perennial contenders, making deep postseason runs in 2012 and 2013, and capturing the 2012 CCAA regular season co-championship.

Between his two tenures at CSUDH, Maier served as head coach at Cal State San Bernardino from 2015-18, where he led the Coyotes to two NCAA playoff berths. Throughout his career, Maier has amassed a collegiate head coaching record of 715-435-2, including 588 wins at CSUDH.

Impact Beyond the Game

While his accolades and records speak volumes, Maier's greatest legacy lies in the lives he has touched. Former players describe him as a father figure, mentor, and life coach whose influence extended well beyond the diamond.

From Alumna Valerie (Long) Osborne:
"Coach Maier has been a bonus father to me since I was 17 years old and moved six hours away from home. The lessons he taught me, both on and off the field, have molded me into the woman I am today. I will always 'Play like a Champion' in life because he taught us more than the game of softball… he taught us how to WIN in life. Nobody does it like him. Nobody can teach it like him. Nobody can ever replace him. Enjoy retirement, Coach! We are blessed to have had the 'opportunity' to be coached by the Best!"

From Current Player Gaby Gandara:
"Coach Maier helped me to fall in love with the game of softball again. He showed me how to find joy in every aspect of the sport, beyond just the results. His philosophy has carried over into my life, and I strive to find joy in all that I do. Coach Maier genuinely cares about his players as people first. He creates a culture that allows us to feel part of a family and play for a greater purpose."

A Lasting Legacy

Maier's influence on Toros softball will endure long after his departure. His teams played with heart, discipline, and passion, reflecting the values he instilled in every player who wore the Toro uniform. His commitment to building a culture of success has left an indelible mark on the program and the university as a whole.

While Maier steps away from the dugout, his legacy as on of the most accomplished and respected coaches at Dominguez Hills. His impact will continue to shape the future of Toro Softball, as his players, past and present, carry forward the lessons he imparted.
