No. 19 Cal State East Bay Spoils Toros' CCAA Home Opener in 89-82 Victory

Box Score CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills sophomore Josiah Sanders led all scorers with 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor, but in the CCAA Game of the Week featuring two unbeaten conference teams, No. 19 Cal State East Bay used a strong second half to erase a 3-point halftime deficit and upend the host Toros 89-82 to hand CSUDH its first conference setback of the year in falling to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in CCAA play.

The Pioneers, meanwhile, remain perfect at 9-0, 3-0 CCAA.

The teams traded baskets to kick off the marquee match-up until a JJ Mitchell steal and fast-break layup gave the Toros an 8-5 lead at the 15:52 mark, with another Mitchell theft on the next CSUEB possession leading to a Sanders flush just 14 seconds later for a 5-point advantage.

Cal State Dominguez Hills maintained its 5-point lead over the next six minutes, until a pair of Sanders buckets sandwiching a Pio turnover brought the host's lead to 23-14 at 8:09.

Another Sanders bucket, this time with 5:44 remaining in the half, gave CSUDH its first double-digit lead at 28-17, only to have the visitors go on an 18-10 run to whittle the Toros edge to just 38-35 entering the half.

CSUEB used its momentum to score the second half's first four points to take its first lead since early in the game, with the teams knotting at 49-49 at the 13:31 mark after the second of two Dasean Stevens made free throws.

No more than four points separated the two teams over the next three minutes until a Ramsey Huff triple pushed the Pio led to 62-56 with just 9:37 left in regulation.

A pair of Jalen Brown freebies brought CSUDH to within four points, but the visitors went on a 14-8 run to push its lead to 10 at 76-66 at the 4:21 mark.

Another pair of Brown free throws inched the Toros to within 78-74 three minutes later, but the Pioneers stayed clutch at the free throw line down the stretch to keep CSUDH no closer than five points the rest of the way in the eventual 7-point decision.

Stevens and Brown added 19 apiece in the loss, with David Cheatom providing 12 points to give the hosts four double-figure scorers.

The Pioneers enjoyed seven more rebounds than the Toros which led to 13 more second-chance points, and made 13 threes compared to just four for the Cardinal and Gold.

CSUDH will look to get back in the win column on Sunday as San Francisco State visits Carson for a 3 pm first tip.
