Toros Surge Past San Marcos with 80-62 Road Victory as Garcia Hits Career Milestone

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros delivered a dominant second-half performance to secure an 80-62 road win over Cal State San Marcos, improving to 7-0 in conference action with Alex Garcia reaching a career milestone in the process.

Garcia, who has been with the program since the 2018-2019 season, scored seven points in the win, pushing his career total to 1,003 points in 104 games played with the Toros. The veteran guard's consistent contributions over the years have been instrumental in the Toros' success.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams tied at 28 going into the break. Jeremy Dent-Smith led the way with seven first-half points, while DJ Guest and David Cheatom each contributed five points. Despite the shooting woes, Dominguez Hills stayed in the game by forcing eight turnovers and grabbing 23 rebounds to match the Cougars' physicality.

In the second half, the Toros found their offensive rhythm, shooting an incredible 71% from the field. Dent-Smith fueled the surge, finishing with 15 points in the period, while Guest and Cheatom combined for 22 second-half points. Dominguez Hills outscored the Cougars 52-34 in the final 20 minutes, using a 15-3 run midway through the half to pull away. The defense continued to shine, forcing 13 turnovers and holding San Marcos to just 36.7% shooting after the break.

Dent-Smith led the Toros with 15 points, four rebounds, and one steal. Guest recorded 14 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, while Cheatom added 13 points and eight boards in a strong two-way performance. Adam Afifi contributed 10 points, six rebounds, and a block, and JT Tan provided 11 points and four rebounds off the bench. The Toros' defense forced 21 turnovers and turned them into 17 points, while the team dominated the paint with 48 points inside.

The Toros will return to action on Saturday, January 11, as they face Sonoma State in another CCAA matchup on the road at 3:30 p.m.
