Toros Claim Tough Road Victory Over Sonoma State, 85-81

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros earned a hard-fought 85-81 road win over Sonoma State in a thrilling CCAA matchup on Saturday afternoon at The Wolves' Den. With the victory, the Toros improved to 12-3 overall and 8-0 in conference play, maintaining their unbeaten record in the CCAA.

The first half was tightly contested, with both teams exchanging leads throughout the period. The Toros shot 40% from the field and hit four three-pointers, but Sonoma State's efficient shooting gave them a 43-37 advantage at halftime. David Cheatom led the Toros with 15 first-half points, while Adam Afifi contributed six points and nine rebounds to keep Dominguez Hills within striking distance.

In the second half, the Toros found their rhythm offensively, shooting an impressive 61.5% from the field and outscoring the Seawolves 48-38. Cheatom continued his dominant performance, scoring 21 points in the half and finishing with a career-high 36 points on 14-of-17 shooting, including three three-pointers. Afifi provided crucial support, posting a double-double with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocks. Jeremy Dent-Smith added 11 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while Alex Garcia contributed nine points and hit clutch free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.

Cheatom led all scorers with 36 points, while Afifi's double-double anchored the Toros in the paint. Dent-Smith and Garcia provided key contributions on both ends of the floor, and JT Tan added six points off the bench. The Toros' defense forced seven turnovers and limited Sonoma State to 35.5% shooting from beyond the arc in the second half, which proved decisive.

The Toros will return home to face Cal State East Bay in another CCAA matchup on Thursday, January 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Torodome.
