Toros Hold Off Cal State East Bay for a Tough 80-73 Win

CARSON, Calif. — The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros battled to an 80-73 victory over Cal State East Bay on Thursday night at the Torodome. The win improves the Toros to 12-3 overall and 9-0 in CCAA play, keeping their undefeated conference streak alive.

The Toros started strong in the first half, building a 39-31 lead at halftime. Jeremy Dent-Smith fueled the offense early, scoring 14 points in the first 20 minutes, including two three-pointers. Adam Afifi was a force in the paint, contributing eight points and pulling down five rebounds. Dominguez Hills shot 41.2% from the field and forced nine turnovers in the first half to set the tone.

In the second half, the Pioneers fought back, cutting into the Toros' lead multiple times. However, Dominguez Hills maintained their composure, shooting 48.3% from the field after the break and converting on 11-of-14 free throws. Dent-Smith added another 15 points in the half to finish with a game-high 29 points, while Afifi posted a double-double with 20 points and eight rebounds. DJ Guest and Jordan Hilstock provided critical support, combining for 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists to keep the Pioneers at bay.

Dent-Smith led all scorers with 29 points, shooting 9-for-20 from the field, 7-for-9 from the free-throw line, and 4-for-12 from beyond the arc. Afifi added 20 points, eight rebounds, and two steals on an efficient 9-of-12 shooting. Guest contributed 10 points, three rebounds, and two steals, while Hilstock filled the stat sheet with nine points, six rebounds, and five assists. Alex Garcia rounded out the effort with seven points, four rebounds, and five assists.

The Toros' defense forced 19 turnovers, converting them into 25 points, while outscoring the Pioneers 36-26 in the paint. Dominguez Hills will return to action at home on Saturday, January 18, when they host San Francisco State in another CCAA matchup at 3:30 p.m. in the Torodome.
