ROHNERT PARK, Calif,.– Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped a four-set match to Sonoma State on Saturday, losing 1-3 (21-25, 20-25, 25-18, 20-25) in CCAA action. With the loss the Toros are now 4-6 overall and 1-1 in CCAA play while the Seawolves move to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in CCAA competition.
The Toros were led by a strong third set, where they hit .346 to take a 25-18 win and extend the match. However, Sonoma State regained control in the fourth set to seal the match victory.
Cal State Dominguez Hills struggled early, hitting .074 in the first set as Sonoma State capitalized on Toro errors to take a 25-21 win. In the second set, the Seawolves continued their momentum, hitting .270 with 15 kills to secure a 25-20 win and a 2-0 match lead.
The Toros responded in the third set with a more efficient attack, posting 11 kills with just 2 errors for a .346 hitting percentage. They held Sonoma State to a .229 clip, taking the set 25-18. However, Sonoma State bounced back in the fourth, hitting .276 to take the final set 25-20.
Fallon Freeman led the Toros with a team-high 12 kills, while Camryn Perdue and Kayly Pau added 7 and 6 kills, respectively. Setter Bailey Fuches contributed 22 assists and was also effective at the service line, recording 2 aces alongside Ava Hurry and Maya Barron, who also added 2 aces each.
Defensively, sophomore Aleya Starnes dominated at the net, tallying 8 blocks, with Camryn Perdue adding 4 blocks and Pau contributing 3. Nina Robles anchored the back row with a match-high 14 digs, while Ava Hurry added 8 digs and Bailey Fuches chipped in with 6.
The Toros finished the match with 39 kills and a .182 hitting percentage, while Sonoma State recorded 51 kills and hit .203.
The Toros will look to bounce back in their next CCAA matchup against Cal Poly Ponoma Friday, September 27th at 4pm .
