TURLOCK, Calif. – In an intense matchup that saw momentum swings and a high-scoring second half, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros emerged victorious against the Stanislaus State Warriors with a final score of 82-77.
The Toros set the tone early, establishing a 39-32 lead by halftime. Their offensive strategy paid dividends, as they managed to navigate through the Warriors' defense with effective shooting and disciplined ball movement. The first half's seven-point advantage was crucial, setting a solid foundation for the remainder of the game.
Stanislaus State, undeterred by the halftime deficit, came back strong in the second half, outscoring the Toros 45-43. The Warriors' spirited comeback attempt showcased their resilience and determination, pushing the Toros to the brink. However, Cal State Dominguez Hills managed to maintain their composure, leveraging their first-half lead to stay ahead despite the Warriors' offensive onslaught.
"It's really hard to win on the road in the CCAA and I'm proud of our guys for keeping their composure and finishing the game" said coach
Steve Becker. "Stanislaus State is so well coached and presented issues for us, but we stayed together, made some adjustments and found a way to gut it out. We've got another tough weekend as we prepared for Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State, and it'll be nice to be back home in Carson."
Jeremy Dent-Smith led the charge for the Toros, putting up an impressive 25 points in 37 minutes. His scoring spree included nine field goals out of 15 attempts, with three successful shots from beyond the arc, and hit 4 of 5 free throws. Dent-Smith also contributed across the board with two rebounds, six assists, and a steal, showcasing his all-around impact on the game.
Jakob Alamudun also played a pivotal role in the victory, scoring 21 points over 34 minutes. His perseverance at the free-throw line, where he made 12 out of 14 attempts, significantly bolstered the Toros' offense. Alamudun rounded out his performance with seven rebounds, two assists, and a steal, proving to be a crucial asset in both offense and defense.
Alex Garcia added a vital 12 points in 25 minutes, hitting 3 of 6 from the field, including 2 of 3 from three-point range, and making 4 of 5 at the free-throw line. Garcia's defensive contributions were notable, with two blocks.
The Toros make their return to the Torodome on Thursday, February 8th where they'll take on Cal State East Bay with tip-off set for 7:30pm.
