Toros Battle Sonoma State to Five Sets

CARSON, Calif. – Cal State Dominguez Hills pushed Sonoma State to the limit but came up short in a five-set thriller (25-22, 22-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-4) Friday night in CCAA play at the Torodome.

The Toros were led by outside Ava Hurry, who tallied a match-high 15 kills on 46 attempts, adding 12 digs and 3 blocks in a strong all-around effort. Right side hitter Kayly Paualso delivered with 13 kills on a .258 hitting percentage, contributing an ace and a block to the team's effort.

After dropping the opening set, Cal State Dominguez Hills rebounded in the second with key plays from setter Maya Barron, who registered 27 assists and added 2 aces. Outside Maria Bejines-Garibay was instrumental with 6 kills and 2 aces, helping the Toros to a 25-22 win. The Toros followed with a narrow 25-23 victory in the third set, showcasing their resilience.

Defensively, libero Nina Robles anchored the back row with 12 digs, while Camryn Perdue and Fallon Freeman contributed to the net defense with 4 and 3 blocks, respectively. Perdue added 8 kills, rounding out an efficient performance.

Sonoma State (11-12, 8-9 CCAA) regained momentum in the fourth set and carried that energy into the fifth, hitting .333 to seal the match.

The Toros return to the Torodome tomorrow, November 16, at 5 p.m. for Senior Night, where they will honor #24 Aleya Starnes and #23 Kayly Pau in their final home match against Cal Poly Humboldt. Fans are encouraged to come and celebrate the seniors while cheering on the Toros in their last match of the season.
