IRVINE, Calif. — The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros secured their inaugural triumph of the season in a resounding fashion, prevailing over the Azusa Pacific Cougars at the Golden Eagle Invitational with a score of 3-1.
In their second matchup of the tournament, the Toros showcased their offensive prowess, unleashing a staggering total of 153 attacks throughout the match. Despite the Cougars notching 50 kills compared to CSUDH's 47, the Toros' performance at the net was truly remarkable, amassing a remarkable 20 block assists, double the tally of their opponents. Moreover, the Toros exhibited superior defensive capabilities, tallying an impressive 81 digs, while the Cougars responded with 74 digs.
The initial set saw CSUDH exerting intense pressure on the Cougars' defense, amassing 17 kills and ultimately clinching the set with a score of 25-23. The Toros continued their dominant display in the second set, triumphing with a convincing score of 25-20. Although the Cougars bounced back to seize the third set with a commanding 25-15 victory, the Toros displayed resilience and determination to seal the overall win with a final set score of 26-24, marking a 3-1 victory in their favor.
Ava Hurry emerged as the standout performer in this match, leading in kills with an impressive 13, complemented by seven digs and three assists.
Camila Sanchez-Tellez contributed 12 kills of her own while also collecting four digs and two crucial block assists.
Bailey Fuches orchestrated the Toros' offense with precision, delivering 19 assists during the match, while
Evania Sanchez demonstrated her own playmaking abilities with 14 assists and also led the team in service aces with a commendable total of four.
The Toros will continue their quest at the Golden Eagle Invitational tomorrow, with an early start on Saturday, September 2nd, facing off against the University of Colorado at 9 a.m.
