Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO -- Playing with everything to lose, Cal State Dominguez Hills did its part to open today's twinbill by hammering Cal State San Bernardino by a 13-3 count to keep its hopes alive for earning the 6th and final berth in next week's CCAA Tournament, but Stanislaus State held off host Cal State East Bay a few minutes later to clinch that elusive spot, eliminating the Toros from postseason.
Aaron Greenfield went 3-for-6 with a home run to lead the Toro offense in the opener before CSUSB took an 8-5 decision in the nightcap.
The Toros exploded for eight runs and five hits to open the afternoon, the big blows coming on two bases-loaded free passes, a
Miguel Marin 2RBI single, a 2RBI triple by
Brock Denbo and a 2-run bomb from reigning CCAA Player of the Week
Aaron Greenfield, staking CSUDH starter Nathan Ortiz to a huge lead before first stepping foot onto the rubber.
After the hosts got two runs back in their bottom half, the Toros took to the offensive again as a sacrifice fly in the 3rd, and a pair of bases-loaded walks brought home three more runs, before an Ogrin RBI single plated the final CSUDH run of the frame in the rout.
Vincent Temesvary, Ogrin,
Emilio Barrera, and
Miguel Marin each knocked two hits while Ortiz ended his Toro career with a win, going 5.0 innings while scattering six hits.
Julio Lopez threw the final 4.0 innings of shutout ball to pick up the save, fanning two with no walks.
The nigthcap saw the visitors take a 5-1 lead after 4.0 innings of work, the big blows coming on an
Eric Smelko 2-run job in the 3rd and a Denbo solo shot an inning later.
That's when the hosts awoke, scoring the final seven runs of the game in the come-from-behind win.
Temesvary and Smelko each belted three hits with Barrera chipping in two more. Senior
Humberto Chiquito went 3.1 innings in his final game as a Toro, with fellow seniors Ben Polak and
Donovan Waitman also seeing action to conclude their Toro careers.
The Toros end their 2023 campaign at 23-27 overall, and 18-22 in the CCAA, and will look to replenish their roster after bidding farewell to 10 seniors.
