CARSON -- With two out in the bottom of the 8th inning and the game tied at 5, junior
Miguel Marin went with a low and outside pitch with runners on 1st and 2nd and sent a squibber towards first base, where it hit the bag and squirted away, allowing pinch-runner
Brock Denbo to score with what proved to be the winning run as Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 7-6 decision over visiting Cal Poly Pomona on a hot yet windy day at Toro Field, splitting the season series at two games apiece.
Down 2-1 following
Anthony Accordino's RBI single in the 4th, the Toros plated four runs in the 5th, courtesy of an
Eric Smelko sac fly, and
Vincent Temesvary opposite field RBI single, wild pitch and
Scott Ogrin RBI double.
That's where the score remained until the top of the 7th when CPP rallied for two to narrow the margin to 5-4.
CSUDH answered with a run in their 7th-inning at-bat on an
Aaron Greenfield RBI single to short, only to have the Broncos tie it in the 8th off Toro reliever
Chris Cornelius, prompting a pitching change.
Onto the mound stepped
Sam Gomez with runners on 1st and 3rd, who needed just two pitches to induce a fly out and keep the game tied and set up Marin's heroics in the bottom half of the 8th.
Gomez did the rest in the 9th, striking out the side in order to earn the win and the series split.
Temesvary, Ogrin,
Eddie Morales and Marin each belted two hits, with Temesvary touching the plate twice.
CSUDH travels to CS San Marcos on Tuesday to make up a postponed contest earlier this season, before traveling to Sonoma State for a CCAA weekend tilt, starting Friday.
