Box Score 2 CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros were on the wrong end of an 18-13 slugfest to open today's CCAA double-header hosting Cal State East Bay, dropping the decision in which the two teams combined for 31 runs and 41 hits, including eight extra-base hits.
Anthony Accordino went 3-for-4 with two walks in the opening game as every Toro position player earned at least one knock.
CSUDH didn't fare any better in the nightcap as CSUEB rolled to a 16-4 win to sweep the twinbill.
Both offenses took center stage in the opener, beginning with four runs put up by the visitors in their first at-bat. The Toros matched that production in their first at-bat, the big blow coming on a 2RBI single by clean-up hitter
Eric Smelko.
CSUEB, however, answered with six runs to take a 10-4 lead, before CSUDH rallied with three runs in the 6th, capped by an
Aaron Greenfield 2RBi single.
The Pios took their turn with three more runs on the board over the next two innings, only to have the Toros strike back, with Smelko banging a 2RBI double to left-center which was followed by Accordino's RBI single to get the Toros to within 13-10.
The visitors, however, put up five in the top of the ninth, the big blow coming on a grand slam by Luke Brown.
Undaunted, CSUDH mounted a late rally after
Vincent Temesvary clubbed a 3-run moon shot to left field, but it was too little, too late in the opening game loss.
Zach Geiss took the loss, lasting just 1.2 innings while allowing five earned runs.
The nightcap saw the Pios continue their offensive onslaught, taking a 16-1 lead after 5.0 innings of play. A wild pitch brought Temesvary home in the 5th, with a Greenfield RBI single and a
Scott Ogrin RBI double in the 7th bringing CSUDH to within 16-4, but it wasn't nearly enough in the setback.
The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch set for 12 noon.
