Toros Complete Sweep of Cal State LA Behind Potent 1-2 Punch of Smelko and Ogrin

Box Score

CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills' potent 1-2 offensive punch of leadoff hitter Eric Smelko and clean-up hitter Scott Ogrin (pictured) fired on all cylinders today, leading the Toros to a 9-2 win and a series sweep over crosstown rival Cal State LA this afternoon on a cold and wet Sunday on Toro Field.

With the win, CSUDH has won four-straight and improves to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in the CCAA.  CSULA, meanwhile, drops to 5-9 and 0-5 in the league.

The Toros continued where they left off yesterday, hammering the Golden Eagle pitching staff by plating four runs in the 1st and a pair in the 2nd inning.

After Smelko opened with the first of four of his hits, Vincent Temesvary brought him home with a sacrifice fly.  Ogrin then plated Aaron Greenfield with a booming opposite field double, before Emilio Barrera doubled home Ogrin and Andrew Buglino singled home Anthony Accordino.

Ogrin was at it again in the next frame, hammering another double to right to bring home two runs.

The two teams traded single runs over the next two innings, before Greenfield and Temesvary both drew bases-loaded walks to bring home the final two runs for the Cardinal and Gold.

Nate Ortiz picked up the win for the Toros, tossing 5.0 innings of work with a strikeout and one earned run allowed.

Smelko finsihed 4-for-4 with 3 runs scored, while Ogrin went 3-for-5 with 4 RBI in the romp.

In the series, Smelko hit .765 (13-for-17) with an OB% of .800 and SLG% of 1.059.  He batted in six and knocked a no-doubter in yesterday's sweep, also drawing an intentional walk in today's win.

The Toros travel to Cal State San Marcos next weekend, with Friday's first pitch set for 2 pm on the CSUSM Baseball Field.
