Box Score CARSON -- It's only the regular season, but today's contest hosting Cal Poly Pomona held a little more importance to Cal State Dominguez Hills after the Broncos took down the Toros in last year's CCAA Tournament Championship series, making today's 6-5 walk-off win all the more meaningful to open the four-game CCAA set.
Scott Ogrin enjoyed a 3-for-5 effort with a home run in the win.
The visitors opened the scoring early with three runs in the first, before the Toros replied with a pair in the second inning, courtesy of a
Justin Abercrombie RBI single and the first of four Bronco errors on the day that brought home
Emilio Barrera.
That's where the score remained until the 5th when Ogrin hammered his team-leading fifth home run of the year, a 2-run shot on the first pitch of the at-bat to bring home the reigning CCAA Player of the Week in
Vincent Temesvary.
CPP, however, regained the lead in this back-and-forth contest with a single run in the 7th and a solo shot to lead off the 9th inning after its defense threw out the would-be tie-breaking Toro run in the bottom of the 8th to get the contest knotted.
The Toros, however, got the first two runners on base after Temesvary drew a five-pitch walk and Ogrin laced an opposite field single down the right field line, before giving way to pinch-runner
Caleb Ellis.
That proved to be a key sub after an Accordino fly ball moved Temesvary to third, and a Barrera sacrifice fly tied the game at 5-5.
Ellis then proceeded to steal second and after
Miguel Marin sent a grounder to third base, scampered all the way home as an errant throw eluded CPP's Marco Malerba at first base to set off a raucous celebration at home plate.
Temesvary scored a pair of runs in the win as CSUDH improved to 14-11 overall and 9-6 in the CCAA, while CPP fell to 16-10 and 8-8 in league action.
The two teams play two tomorrow, with game one set for a 12 noon start.
