ROHNERT PARK -- Sophomore
DJ Guest made himself at home tonight with a game-high 21 points in leading a short-handed Cal State Dominguez Hills squad to a convincing and much-needed 72-61 win at Sonoma State tonight, snapping a seven-game skid.
Suiting up just five players, the Toros drained 20-of-23 of their foul shots with Guest leading the way after sinking 9-of-10.
After spotting the hosts an early 6-2 lead, the Toros went on a 13-0 run to seize control of the game en route to a 15-6 lead, the last points courtesy of a
David Cheatom bucket at the 12:24 mark. A 3-pointer by
Jeremy Dent-Smith gave the Toros their first double-figure lead at 18-8, with another Dent-Smith triple pushing CSUDH's edge to 37-24 with 3:43 left in the half.
Guest gave the visitors its biggest lead of the half after a pull up made it 41-25 as the Toros entered the break up 41-28.
The Seawolves cut into their deficit after the break, getting to within nine at 44:35 with just under four minutes elapsed.
CSUDH's lead shrank to as little as five points on two occasions over the next six minutes, until a pair of Dent-Smith freebies and a
Jordan Hilstock old-fashioned 3-point play grew the Toro lead to 10 at 53-43 midway through the period.
SSU closed the gap to just 58-56 six minutes later, but Guest would score the next eight Toro points to provide much-needed breathing room, with stellar free throw shooting down the stretch keeping the Seawolves at arm's length the rest of the way.
Dent-Smith went for a career-high 17 points while Hilstock added 16 and Cheatom 10 in the win.Â
Isaiah Morris scored eight points, adding seven assists and five crucial boards to his statline.
CSUDH goes for a weekend sweep on Saturday at Cal Poly Humboldt, with tip set for 7:30 pm.
