ARCATA -- The short-handed Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball could've used a number of excuses tonight at Cal Poly Humboldt -- being in a hostile environment, having lost seven of their last eight, suiting up only six players after suiting up only six two nights ago -- but instead came up with the gutsiest performance in recent memory after erasing a 4-point deficit with 13 seconds left in regulation and gutting out a character-defining 89-85 overtime win tonight.
DJ Guest led all players with 27 points including 12-of-13 from the foul line, while
Andre Ball (pictured) added 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 from downtown that included the game-tying bucket in regulation with :03 left that sent the game into overtime.
The Toros improve to 10-14 overall and 6-12 in the CCAA, just two games out of the 6th and final spot in the CCAA tournament with four to play.
After the teams split the game's first 20 points, CPH went on a 9-0 run before a Ball triple at the 12:38 mark ended the spurt. Another Ball jumper four minutes later brought the Toros to within 24-20, with a
Jeremy Dent-Smith triple and fastbreak layup giving the Toros their first lead of the game at 28-27 with 5:30 left in the half.
The Lumberjacks, however, closed strong, going on a 15-6 to take a 42-34 lead into the break, and maintaining a double-figure cushion midway through the second half.
Down 59-49 at the 10:16 mark, a Ball 3-pointer spurred a 13-6 run, capped by a Guest layup that brought the Toros to within 65-62 seven minutes later.
Jordan Hilstock drained a 3-pointer with just under two minutes left to knot the game at 67-all, setting up Ball's heroics in regulation.
In the extra period, the teams split the first 14 points before buckets by Guest and Dent-Smith gave the Toros an 85-81 lead. After a huge steal by Ball,
Isaiah Morris drained two free throws for a two-possession lead with 30 seconds left in overtime, and after a missed 3-point attempt by the hosts and a defensive team rebound, Guest drained two free throws to seal the deal in the eventual 89-84 win.
Dent-Smith added 15 and Cheatom 14 in the win, despite being out-rebounded by 14. A huge key to tonight was at the foul line where the Toros made 19-of-22 compared to just 14-of-21 for the Jacks.
CSUDH returns home with much-needed momentum on Thursday, hosting Cal State San Marcos, which already has clinched a berth in the upcoming league tournament.
