Toros Keep CCAA Tourney Hopes Alive After 68-61 Win vs CSULA

Victory is head coach Steve Becker's 100th at CSUDH

CARSON -- Inspired from witnessing the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team's banner celebration after they earned at least a share of the CCAA regular season title, the men's basketball team dug deep to hold off crosstown rival Cal State LA behind freshman Jeremy Dent-Smith's career-high 23 points, giving head coach Steve Becker his 100th win as Toro head coach.

Prior to the game, the Toros, who moved to 11-15 overall and 7-13 in CCAA play, recognized lone senior Hunter Seymour, who finished with eight points and seven boards in the win.

After the visitors put the first two points on the board, it was all CSUDH as Jordan Hilstock's 3-pointer spurred a 10-0 run, capped by a Dent-Smith triple at the 15:59 mark.

Seymour gave the Toros their first double-figure lead three minutes later at 14-4, before CSULA went on a 13-2 run to take a 17-16 advantage.

The Golden Eagles continued to find their rhythm to the tune of a 30-23 edge with 2:58 left in the half, before the Toros closed with a 6-2 run, with Dent-Smith contributing four of the points.

Neither team would let the other escape its sight, tying at 54-all at the 6:07 mark.  Seymour drained two freebies to put CSUDH up by two, and followed that with a jumper after a CSULA turnover.

Cameron Barry nailed a triple to give the Toros a 61-56 lead with 3:45 left, only to have CSULA get to within 61-60 a minute later.

That's when CSUDH's acumen at the free throw line paid dividends, with Isaiah Morris sinking four-straight down the stretch in the seven-point win.

Eleven more turnovers nearly doomed the Toros, but CSUDH more than made up for it with a 39 to 21 rebound edge.

Morris added 11 in the win while Andre Ball pulled down a game-high 10 boards.

CSUDH takes to the road next weekend to conclude the regular season, starting Thursday at San Francisco State.
