Toros Drop Heartbreaker at SFSU, Eliminated from CCAA Postseason

SAN FRANCISCO -- Ecstasy turned to agony in a span of 30 seconds for the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team as host San Francisco State scored with one second left on the clock to take a heartbreaking 62-60 win over the Toros after a Jordan Hilstock triple tied the game 30 seconds earlier.

With the loss, CSUDH officially is eliminated from the CCAA postseason tournament.

Hilstock led his team with 15 points and all players with eight boards, but the hosts were near perfect at the line and out-rebounded the Toros by eight in the contest.

The Gators jumped out from the opening tip, increasing their 8-4 lead with two minutes elapsed to 17-7 nine minutes later.  SFSU's lead was 22-10 before two Andre Ball freebies spurred an 11-2 run that saw the Toros climb to within 24-21 after Jeremy Dent-Smith drained a triple.

Dent-Smith gave the Toros their first lead at 31-29 at the 1:35 mark, and another bucket by the freshman and triple by Hilstock put CSUDH up 35-29 entering the break.

The visitors kept their lead halfway through the second stanza, capped by an Isaiah Morris 3-pointer for a 48-43 lead at the 11:19 mark, only to have the hosts catch the Toros at 48-all two minutes later,

Neither team would take more than a two-point lead until the Gators eeked out in front by three with :48 left on the clock.

After a Toro time out, Hilstock's 3-pointer 17 seconds left looked to send the game into overtime, but SFSU had one last bucket in it for the 2-point victory.

Dent-Smith and Ball finished with 13 points each, with David Cheatom adding 10 and team-high two blocks.

The Toros shot just 36.5% from the floor but found better luck from behind the arc, connecting on 38.9% of their efforts from downtown.

CSUDH concludes the 2022-23 season on Saturday at CS Monterey Bay, with tip set for 3 pm.
