Toros Can't Hold Lead as CS San Marcos Takes 72-64 Win on ASI Night

Box Score CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills held a five-point lead at the half, but visiting Cal State San Marcos outscored the hosts by 13 in the second half en route to a 72-64 win over the Toros on ASI Night, snapping CSUDH's two-game win streak.

Jordan Hilstock led all players with nine boards, adding 13 points in the setback that drops CSUDH to 10-15 overall and 6-13 in league play.  Despite the loss, the Toros remain in the hunt for a berth in the upcoming CCAA tournament, needing some help along the way.

It was the Jeremy Dent-Smith show in the first half as the true freshman scored 12 points to lead all players, all coming from beyond the arc.  After David Cheatom outscored the Cougars 6-4 in the early going, Dent-Smith hit the first of his four triples to put the Toros back ahead at 9-8 at the 15:23 mark.

Hilstock followed with his own triple for a four-point lead, before Dent-Smith hit another to give CSUDH a 15-8 cushion.

After the Cougars cut their deficit to just 17-13, Hilstock and Dent-Smith each connected from downtown to maintain a seven-point lead before the Toros settled for a 30-25 advantage entering the break.

The second half saw CSUDH extend its lead to nine at 36-27 after an old-fashioned 3-point play by reigning CCAA Player of the Week DJ Guest, but the Cougars would go on a 9-2 run to get to within a pair, before Guest hit a triple to give the Toros a slight cushion.

With the Toros up 43-36 after a Hilstock layup, the Cougars again answered, this time by a 13-2 count to take a 49-45 lead with 8:39 left in regulation.

Andre Ball stopped the surge with a bucket in the paint, but CSUSM would not be denied, reeling off a 7-0 run to take a 56-47 lead two minutes later.

The Toros would get to within as close as three points down the stretch, but the Cougars were solid at the free throw line, eventually taking the eight-point win.

Guest and Dent-Smith paced the Toros with 15 points each, but shot just 11-for-20 from the foul line, compared to 20-of-23 for the visitors.

CSUDH concludes its home schedule on Saturday hosting crosstown rival Cal State LA for a 3 pm tip.  Prior, the Toros will honor their lone senior in Hunter Seymour in a pregame ceremony.
