CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros secure their eight straight victory, in a remarkable display of resilience as they rallied from a first-half deficit to defeat Cal State Monterey Bay 72-65. The Toros are on the longest winning streak since the 2010-2011 season.
Cal State Monterey Bay started strong, establishing a 39-32 lead at halftime. Their aggressive play in the first half set a challenging pace for the Toros. However, the second half saw a dramatic shift in momentum. The Toros, undeterred by their initial setback, mounted an impressive comeback, outscoring Monterey Bay 40-26.
The Toros' second-half surge was characterized by a more cohesive offensive strategy and tightened defense, enabling them to not only erase the seven-point halftime deficit but also to take the lead and maintain it through the end of the game.
"I was happy with the way the ball moved tonight, in terms of our offense and the unselfishness we played with" said coach
Steve Becker. "We missed some shots, but they were good shots and I feel like the ball moved in a way that complements our versatility."
Coach Becker continued, "We did a better job in the second half on the glass, which ultimately allowed us to play with pace and take the lead for good."
Jeremy Dent-Smith was the top scorer for the Toros, tallying 21 points. He shot 6-13 from the field, including 1-7 from three-point range, and excelled at the free-throw line, sinking 8 of 10 attempts. Dent-Smith also contributed six rebounds and four assists, showcasing his all-around game.
Playing a pivotal role in the victory for the Toros was
Jakob Alamudun as he scored 18 points on 6-12 shooting, including an impressive 3-4 from beyond the arc. Alamudun added three rebounds and three assists, contributing to both the offensive and defensive efforts.
Alex Garcia added 10 points, shooting an efficient 3-4 from the field and 2-2 from three-point range. Garcia also grabbed five rebounds and made two blocks, showcasing his defensive capabilities.
Adding 6 points and leading the team with 10 rebounds,
Andre Ball also added three assists and a block to his stat line.
Za-Ontay Boothman and
DJ Guest added eight and six points, respectively. Boothman made key shots, including two three-pointers, while Guest contributed seven rebounds, aiding the team's efforts on the boards.
The collective effort from these leaders, combined with a strong team defense that resulted in seven steals and four blocks by
Jordan Hilstock, were key factors in the Toros' victory.
The Toros return to the Torodome on Thursday, December 14th as they take on Stanton University at 5pm.
