CARSON — The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros mounted a successful second-half comeback to defeat the Sonoma State Seawolves 59-55 in a closely contested encounter.
After trailing at the end of the first half with a score of 21-25, the Toros rallied in the second half, outscoring Sonoma State by eight points to seal the victory.
Overall, the Toros finished the game shooting 32.2% from the field, 28.6% from the three-point line, and 65.2% from the free-throw line. Their persistent effort yielded 19 second-chance points.
The game was tightly contested, with the score tied seven times and the lead changing hands on 11 occasions, reflecting a closely fought battle throughout. The Toros were able to capitalize on turnovers, turning them into nine points.
They also added 24 points in the paint, showing their ability to score inside, and fast break points contributed five points to the total score.
"I am really encouraged with the resilience our guys showed down the stretch of tonight's game" said coach
Steve Becker. "Credit to Sonoma, their defense kept us out of rhythm for a majority of the game. We really defended and kept some of their better players below their averages and ultimately held them to 55 points. I am very happy with our defense tonight. We'll get some good rest tonight and aim to get another one on the road at Cal State San Marcos Saturday."
Jakob Alamudun led the scoring for the Toros with 13 points, including a three-pointer and a perfect record from the free-throw line. He also pulled down nine rebounds, contributing significantly to the team's success on the boards.
Instrumental in the victory was
Andre Ball, adding 12 points to the Toros' tally. Ball showed his effectiveness at the free-throw line, going 7-12, and contributed across the board with three rebounds, two assists, and a block.
DJ Guest and
Jeremy Dent-Smith each contributed 11 points. Guest was a force on the defensive end with two steals as he also grabbed seven rebounds, while Dent-Smith added five rebounds and three assists to his stat line, including two three-pointers.
Alex Garcia led the team in minutes and contributed six points and eight rebounds, helping to secure the Toros' dominance in rebounding
