LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros fell to the No. 25 UCLA Bruins in their 2023-24 season opening exhibition, 97-56.
DJ Guest led the Toros with 10 points, scoring five points in the first half and five points in the second, on 3 of 7 shooting in 17 minutes of play. He was a perfect 4 for 4 from the free throw line and collected two steals.
Jacob Washington led CSUDH charge defensively collecting 7 rebounds and adding 4 assists.
CSUDH opened the scoring with a three-pointer by Guest and established themselves early keeping pace with the Bruins trailing by little as 10 points at the first two media timeouts. It was then, the Bruins' veteran experience broke out offensively and kept Dominguez fighting for every possession.
The Toros went into the locker room trailing UCLA 46-28. The Toros finished the first half shooting 32% 9 of 28 from the field, 2 of 13 from three and shooting 88% from the free-throw line. CSUDH got on the board to start the second half thanks to two early free throws by
Jakob Alamudun. However, the Toros were outscored by the Bruins 51-28 in the second half. They shot 9 of 36 from the field, while being 3 of 13 from long range. They finished the night 18 of 64 from the field, and 5 of 26 from beyond the arc while converting 83 percent from the free throw line.
CSUDH uses this game as a final test before the regular season begins next weekend in Arcata on the campus of Cal Poly Humboldt as part of the 2023 West Region Crossover Challenge. The Toros open the campaign Friday against Western Washington of the GNAC. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
