CARSON -- Riding high after winning their fourth game in five chances two days ago in Turlock, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team came up short against visiting and No. 12-ranked Cal State San Bernardino in a make-up game that was postponed from last month.
Â
Jordan Hilstock led the Toros with 21 points but the visitors sizzled from the field, scoring at a 52.7% clip.
The visitors scored the game's first five points, a harbinger of things to come on a wet and chilly night in Carson.
After a
DJ Guest layup knotted the score at 7-7, CSUSBÂ went on a 10-2 run to take a 17-12 lead at the 12:44 mark.
An
Andre Ball flush gave the hosts momentum, and Hilstock capitlized with a free throw and triple to bring CSUDH to within 19-18 two minutes later.
The Toros would take their first lead of the contest at 34-33 on a
David Cheatom bucket at the 4:39 mark, only to have the Yotes answer with a 7-3 run to close the half and enter intermission up 40-37.
CSUSB pushed its lead to 50-41 3:10 minutes into the second half, taking a double-digit lead at 54-43 two minutes later.
CSUDHÂ closed to seven at 54-47 on an old-fashioned 3-point play courtesy of Hilstock, but the Yotes again answered, scoring the next six points to give themselves breathing room at 60-47.
The hosts had one more run in them as they closed the gap to five points at 67-62 after a
DeMorian Lowe free throw with 6:08 left in regulation, but the visitors continued to keep their collective paw on the offensive pedal, using a 10-2 run to put the game out of reach in the eventual 87-77 decision.
Guest chipped in 19 points and
Cameron Barry 13, but suffered at the charity stripe where CSUSB saw a 14-point edge in free throws in 17 more attempts.
The Toros continue home action this week as Cal State Monterey Bay visits the Torodome on Thursday, with tipoff set for 7:30 pm.
