CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills'
Cameron Barry scored a game-high 24 points, but visiting Stanislaus State converted a free throw in the final second to break a tie en route to escaping with a 66-65 win over the Toros tonight in the Torodome.
The hosts stormed out of the gate in the first half, taking a 10-5 lead after a Barry triple with 5:15 elapsed, pushing it to double figures at 19-9 after
Isaiah Morris hit the second of two free throw attempts.
After Stan State went on a 10-0 run to get to within one point and force a CSUDH timeout,
Jordan Hilstock nailed a deep three, instigating a 15-3 run for the hosts and a 13-point lead at 34-21 with 3:04 left in the half. Another deep triple by Hilstock grew CSUDH's lead to 39-23 just over a minute later as the Toros settled for a 39-25 lead at the half.
The hosts looked to stay in control of the contest after maintaining a 15 point lead at 51-36 after
David Cheatom converted a freebie nearly seven minutes into the period.
That's when the Warriors began chipping away, climbing to within 11 at 56-45 after a pair of Mahda Fallay free throws, and to 56-51 after two more free throws, this time by Marlon Short.
A 3-pointer by Barry halted the run and put CSUDH up 61-52 with 7:26 left in regulation, only to see Stan State score the next six points to creep to within 61-58 over the next two minutes.
With the Toros clinging to a 65-52 lead after a Cheatom bucket, Stan State hit a three to tie the game at 65 with 1:55 left.
Both teams came up short on their next two possessions, until an offensive board by Stan State resulted in a Toro foul with one second left to give the Warriors a chance to take the lead with two free throw attempts.
A raucous crowd caused Trevion Williams to miss the first shot, but he drained the second to give the visitors the hard-fought win.
Andre Ball and Cheatom added 13 points apiece in the setback that dropped the Toros to 8-11 overall, and 4-9 in the CCAA.
CSUDH welcomes Chico State on Saturday, with tipoff set for 3 pm in the Torodome.
