Andre Ball and
DJ Guest each scored 19 points, but the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team dropped an 85-78 overtime decision at second-place Cal State San Marcos to start the second half of the CCAA schedule Saturday.
The Toros fall to 8-10 overall and 4-8 in the CCAA. The Cougars, who entered the day knowing they will end it in second place.
Dominguez Hills had a 67-62 lead going into the final minute of regulation. While San Marcos took a 68-67 lead with 37 second remaining, Guest only made 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game. Both sides did have one possession to try and take the lead but never accomplished it.
While the Cougars took the lead to start overtime, the Toros got a traditional 3-point play from
Cameron Barry and a 3-point shot from Guest to tie the game at 78 with 2:28 left. The Cougars would go on a 7-0 run while the Toros couldn't hit a field goal shot to the end.
In addition to Ball and Guest combining for 38 points, Barry finished with a dozen.
The Toros had one of their best shooting performances in the season, hitting 49.1 percent (27-of-55) of their shots. The Cougars, though, ended the day shooting 52.2 percent (35-of-67).
Damien Miller grabbed 11 of the Toros' 35 rebounds.
San Marcos' Quinn Denker played every minute of the game and led both sides with 27 points.
The Toros return home to play host to Stanislaus State on Thursday. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. The Toros were 68-56 winners in the last meeting in Turlock earlier in the month.
