Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By Rick Hoskin

Golden Eagles Use Free Throws in the End to Best Toros

LOS ANGELES – Cameron Barry scored 23 points for the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team, but crosstown rivals Cal State LA capitalized on the free throw line in the final minute to hold off the Toros 80-77 at University Gymnasium Thursday evening.

The Toros, defeated in three of their last four games, drop below .500 again at 8-9 while dipping into 4-7 in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles are also 8-9 overall but improve to 5-6 in the conference. As the second half of the conference season begins, the Toros are in ninth place with a two-game gap between them and sixth-place Cal Poly Pomona. Los Angeles and Stanislaus State are in between the Broncos and Toros, respectively.

Andre Ball scored 14 points and had eight of the Toros 40 rebounds while Jordan Hilstock had a dozen points along with four boards.

Both sides were nearly matched in the shooting column. Dominguez Hills went 25-of-59 (42.4 percent) and Los Angeles went 26-of-58 (44.8 percent). Three-point shooting proved to be a factor in the game as the Golden Eagles went 14-for-28 from beyond the arc. The Toros were 8-of-23.

The game saw 11 different lead changes and nine times were both tied. Los Angeles entered the final minute of the ballgame leading 73-67. Though they never made any field goal attempts in that timespan, the Golden Eagles made 8-of-10 free throws, holding off a 10-point scoring run by the Toros.

The Toros will hop on Highway 5 and head to Cal State San Marcos on Saturday at 3 p.m.
